Gemini Gems are Google's no-code way to build a specialized Gemini AI agent. You write a persona, give it instructions, optionally connect Google Workspace files, and Gemini follows the playbook. It is the Google equivalent of Custom GPTs and Claude Projects. Best as a personal-assistant builder inside the Google ecosystem.
A Gem is a specialized Gemini chat with a persona, instructions, and optional context files. You build it in the Gems editor inside the Gemini app. The Gem then appears in your Gemini sidebar like a saved custom assistant. Tap it and the conversation starts with the persona and instructions already loaded.
The integration with Google Workspace is the key differentiator. Gems can read from Gmail, Drive, Calendar, and Docs if you grant access. That makes them useful for personal admin work where the relevant data already lives in Google. For Amazon-specific workflows, the Workspace integration does not help; Gems are best for personal assistant patterns.
Gems live inside the Gemini app. Most useful features (custom Gems, longer context, Workspace integration) require Google AI Premium or a Google Workspace tier with Gemini included. Free users have access to limited pre-built Gems. Specific tier pricing changes over time; check Google's current Gemini pricing pages for the latest numbers.

Pros:
Cons:
I run my email through Gmail and store internal docs in Google Drive. A Gem that reads my Gmail and helps triage SellerShorts support email saved time during a busy launch week. The Workspace integration did the work no other tool could match easily. For anything that has to touch Amazon Seller Central or our internal SellerShorts data, I do not reach for Gems; the integration story does not fit. For personal Google-stack admin work, Gems are the cleanest pick.
Available in the Gemini app. Custom Gems require Google AI Premium or a Workspace tier with Gemini included.

Gems are most useful with Gemini Advanced (part of Google AI Premium or Workspace tiers). Free users have access to some pre-built Gems with usage limits; building custom Gems is part of paid tiers.
Same shape: chat-native agent built with persona and instructions. Gems are tied to Gemini and integrate naturally with Google Workspace (Gmail, Docs, Drive). Custom GPTs integrate with the ChatGPT app and have GPT Store distribution. Pick based on which assistant your team already uses.
For research, drafting, and personal admin work, yes. For Amazon-specific workflows that need Seller Central or Ads access, Gems are not the right shape. Use Make, n8n, or a dedicated agent framework for that.
